Renewable Energy

Investigate renewable energy, understand the principles, and discover why it is important. Investigate different generator systems and how to store energy. Look at early examples of wind turbines and learn hands on about generating electricity from renewable sources.

Water

Water is essential to life, making up over 70% of the earth's surface found in streams, lakes and oceans. The distribution of natural resources and the effect of rainfall, either too much or not enough, is the key to life on earth.

Investigate the water cycle and the impact water has on both physical georgraphy and human settlement.

We offer the opportunity to explore the footprint of water, its impact on people and the planet, in all its various forms and uses. Learn about the journey of water at CAT by following a guided trail from the reservoir in the hills down to the water balanced railway.

Green Building / Green Living

Our building and living workshops and activities investigate issues around sustainable living and offer the opportunity to explore solutions. We look at the barriers to achieving net zero emissions and how we can use a toolbox of ideas to inspire, inform and enable changes in the way that we live.

Recycling Challenge

What can we recycle and why is it important that we do? Investigate common everyday items and complete our recycling challenge. Look around our site to see what we have made from recycled items!

Plastics, plastics, plastics!

Why are plastics a problem and what can we do about it? Form a panel of experts to offer solutions and advice. Work on a campaign to take back to school to reduce the use of plastic where you live.

Zero Carbon Britain

Explore how we can reduce Britain’s carbon emissions to zero through discussion and debate. Find out what a zero carbon Britain would be like. Follow our Zero carbon Britain trail around site and choose a workshop to explore and develop these ideas:

Workshop 1:

Zero Carbon Britain game using a large floor map and model construction to investigate different scenarios. The students work in teams to discuss, present and debate their plan for the future.

Workshop 2

The Greenhouse Gas game - an interactive workshop designed to show how the greenhouse effect works and the problems associated with global warming. Become sun’s energy rays! As part of the exercise the group undertake a site survey to distinguish good and bad environmental practice.

Landscape and Ecology

CAT is situated in the UNESCO Dyfi Boisphere in the foot hills of Snowdonia which has some of the most special landscapes and wildlife areas in Europe.

Within our 7 acre site, there are seven unique habitats including woodland, heathland and meadow, hiding an amazing story and a serious mission. The site is large enough to contain a whole variety of outdoor learning experiences, but is small enough to be toured and understood. Some sessions take place in our 20 acre woodland situated a adjacent to site.

 

Woodland Guided Walk

Follow a trail through the woodland environment, see the dormouse reserve, native trees and CAT wind turbines.

Available to all ages

This takes up to 2 hours and is suitable for a maximum of 18 participants. The cost is £60 per hour per workshop


The following activities are available from April 2018:

Seasonal Trail

Follow our Quarry trail overlooking the centre, reservoir and the Dulas Valley. Find out about the history of the area and investigate what you can find in each season. Make observations about what you can see. Consider why the environment is as you see and think about what has made it like that. Lots of opportunities to investigate and explore.

Forest Explorers

Explore the forest and find out about the trees and wildlife that live there. Learn about tree identification and why trees grow where they do – discover the dimensions of trees. Which is the oldest tree you can find? Enjoy a range of activities including storytelling, den building and plan a story that you would like to write. Follow on activities are available to continue in school. Enjoy hot chocolate in a woodland clearing at the end of the session.

Environmental Art

Become an environmental artist using found natural objects. Use your imagination to create a piece of art which reflects the beauty of the Dyfi Biosphere.

Sensory Exploration

This activity takes places outside in a woodland environment. Participants explore the area relying on different senses as part of the activities. Workshops will be centred around communication, language and literacy with some shared writing to develop the sensory experience.

During part of this session, participants are invited to wear a blindfold and rely on other senses. Great for team building and confidence. Lots of fun but can be muddy and wet! Old clothes and shoes are needed.

Each group is met on arrival by one of our Engagement team and has a brief introductory talk. We are able to build a programme for your visit from the following options. Most of the activities we offer can be adapted to suit the age range and curriculum focus of your group. We have indicated the likely range.

These workshops have been developed by some of the foremost experts in the field as part of their work here in Wales, as well as internationally.

In addition to the workshops outlined above, we are able to offer a guided tour of the visitor centre, tailored to your needs and adaptable for different ages. The maximum group size for a tour is 18 and the cost is £75 to £90 per tour, dependant on length of tour.

Please note: workshop charges do not include admission to the Centre. Our charges vary according to season and discounts are offered for groups.
